Silencing Cyberbullies - This is an article in the National Education Association magazine, which talks about students affected by cyberbulling. This article provides information for educators and parents on how to prevent cyberbulling.

 

 

 

Community Resourses

Kidscan! - A special Support program designed for children who have a parent diagnosed with cancer. During this special program, kids will:

  • Learn about cancer
  • Talk with other kids who have a family member with cancer
  • Participate in fun activities
  • Be is a safe nurturing environment
  • Bring parent to participate in their own group

YMCA G.I.R.L. Summit - YMCA is offering their First Annual G.I.R.L.S. Summit to middle school girls. Duke Youth Programs: Heroes and Villains: Creating a World of Fantasy and Adventure
For Students in Grades 6 – 8, Saturday, December 5th: 9AM – 4PM Sunday, December 6th: 10AM – 4PM Cost: $175 Meals and Materials Provided

Heroes and Villains: Creating a World of Fantasy and Adventure is a weekend-long creative writing workshop for students currently in grades 6-8 during the 2009-2010 academic year. Led by instructors from Duke Young Writers' Camp, Dan Wales and Don Campbell, participants in this workshop will learn how to unleash their creative juices to bring life to their super heroes and their adversaries! Hospice of Wake County's Horizon's Grief Center - Upcoming grief workshops for children, teens and families. These workshops are excellent options for children, teens, and families during a normally difficult time of year, with the holiday season and long nights and short days.   These workshops are designed to be brief yet powerful and comprehensive opportunities to help grieving families. Mental Health

NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) - FREE Course for Parents/Caregivers - NAMI Basics

NAMI Basics is a free 6- week class that is designed specifically for parents and caregivers of children/adolescents, 18 years and younger, who are living with mental illness. This is a NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) signature program and volunteers are trained by NAMI National to teach the class.  The materials have been well-reviewed by leaders in the field.   This free class is for parents of children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety disorder, bipolar, OCD, ODD or other mental health diagnoses. The class discusses how a diagnosis is made, what it means, treatment options, how to best communicate and interact with your child and how parents can be supportive at school and in the community.  It is a well researched, informative program that parents have found quite helpful.  A Wake County class is scheduled for January in 3 at the Commons Building. See the information below and please pass this information on to anyone who could benefit.
