On Tuesday, April 15, students in Mr. Garren’s seventh grade Language Arts class participated in an online discussion with Suzanne Fischer Staples, author of Under the Persimmon Tree. The class had been reading the novel, using it to examine both the cultures of central Asia and the constructs of literature, when several students contacted the author via email to learn more about decisions she had made in writing her story.
For more than an hour on the 15th, students asked Mrs. Staples questions focusing on her life as a writer, her experiences living in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, and her motivations and decisions in writing the novel. Mrs. Staples answered each student, taking time to explain how the personal contacts she had in the region informed her story telling. In the end, students learned that, though the novel is a work of fiction, many of the events included were taken directly from first hand accounts of refugees Mrs. Staples interacted with while there. Click HERE to hear a short audio clip of her conversation with two students.
Lufkin opened a new computer lab on April 2. Mrs. Nash's class was the first to use the lab. They are creating a website using Macromedia Dreamweaver software. We would like to extend a big thank you to the LRMS PTA for providing the funding for the wiring and computer tables. The new Dell computers were received as part of the bond referendum. Students and teachers are very excited about this new facility.
Lufkin recently opened its new fitness center, thanks to the generosity of Prosousce Fitness and Ann Dishong. As they learn to use the equipment, staff and students will find that they have access to elypitcals, treadmills, and a full spin class setting.
This was the first time that Lufkin had a Diversity Day! It turned out to be a great hit and we plan to try it again next year. Diversity Day was inspired by the many cultures of the students and staff of Lufkin Road Middle School. During the assembly we did a dramatic reading, Did You Know Facts, live music from the chorus, a poster contest, and Dr. Dingle sang with selected students....
