Lufkin was recently recognized by Wake County Environmental Services for its recycling program. During the 2008-09 school year, Lufkin recycled the most pounds of paper per student of any year-round middle school: 17.4 pounds per student, for a total of 19,815 pounds of recycled paper! In addition, through our "Lufkin Less Paper" initiative last year, which focused on reducing the overall amount of paper used throughout the school, Lufkin's paper usage was decreased by 13%. Schools tend to use a lot of paper over the course of a year, but we are working at Lufkin to reduce our overall paper usage, and to recycle the paper we do use. Congratulations to our staff and students for their work in this area!

On August 4, 2009, Barry Furey, Director of the 911 Center, came to Lufkin Road Middle School to present a "Great Job" Award to Nicholas Miller. Nicholas, a sixth grade student, has twice called 911 in order to enlist emergency medical assistance for his mother. Mr. Furey praised Nick for his good judgement and level headedness, saying he was very helpful to the dispatchers. At the presentation at Lufkin, Nick got to meet those dispatchers, Chris Mise and Stephanie Barnard. Click HERE to listen to a 3 min interview of Nick.
Lufkin is proud to announce that Jennie Jones has been named the 2009 NC Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Physical Education Association (PEA) of NCAAHPERD. This award is reflective of her outstanding qualities as a professional physical educator. Ms. Jones will receive her award and be honored at the annual NCAAHPERD Convention in November.
On May 1, Congressman David Price visited Lufkin Road Middle School. He toured the school, visiting with teachers and administrators. Representative Price spoke to a group of 8th grade students about his role in government: "At the end of the day, politics is all about making the community better and we all ought to care about that, " he said to the students. He led them in a question and answer session where he encouraged them to get involved in politics: "We live in a democracy and it's our job to care about government and get involved."
